SHAH ALAM, SELANGOR, Aug 6:

Malaysians crowned 24-year-old Asmawi Ani, better known as Mawi, as the champion of Akademi Fantasia 3 tonight.

The hugely popular Mawi, from Kulai, Johor, also won the "Best Vocals" and "Best Performance" awards at the final concert which came to an explosive close at Malawati Stadium here.

The result was no surprise, particularly after Mawi, a former part-time deejay consistently secured top spot at the show's weekly concerts for nine weeks.

Mawi beat three other finalists — Felix Agus (Felix), Marsha Milan Londoh (Marsha) and Amylea Mohd Azizan (Amy). Trailing closely behind him was Felix while Amylea came in third followed by Marsha in fourth place.

He garnered 58 per cent of the 1.7 million votes. Felix chalked up 30 per cent, Amylea eight and Marsha four.

A beaming Mawi took home a whopping RM322,000 worth of prizes, including a Suzuki Swift 1.5L Hatchback, a holiday package to London and Paris, a home theatre system, electrical appliances, a trophy and RM20,000.

He also won RM3,000 and a trophy for each of the two special awards.

PROUD TO PRODUCE CHAMPIONS: Akademi Fantasia 3 principal M. Nasir announcing the “graduation” of his charges at the final last night. Behind are (from right) Mawi, Felix, Amylea and Marsha.

"I am grateful for all these rezeki (blessings) from Allah. I am also eternally grateful to the trainers who had worked so hard to make me who I am today," said the down-to-earth Mawi after he was crowned champion.
